Questions that keep Charlie up at night...

These special conversations between Charlie and I usually come up around 10 pm, two hours past bedtime. I remember as a girl having pressing thoughts or questions that would prevent me from sleeping until I had the answer. My parents were usually downstairs watching TV or reading when I'd go down and ask how to spell "discipline" or some such question. I simply could not sleep until I had the answer. I still have that problem, but Charlie has it worse. I guess I shouldn't call it a "problem". The boy has such heavy thoughts and curiousity for a five year old. He amazes and scares me. Here are tonight's questions:

1. How did we get here? I mean before the animals, plants, dinosaurs and chromagnums?
2. Why do some people think it's because of God and some think the earth put us here?
3. How come I can talk?
4. Why do my legs walk?
5. Why is blood red?
6. How did I get here? How are babies made? (when I asked him what he thought, he said, "well the man fertilizes the woman's egges with what's it called...?"-I tried to move on from here)
7. What are testicles for? What do your kidneys do?
8. Why do we have to have rules for everything?
9. Why can't I be rude at the dinner table?
10. Why are barbers usually men?

I tried to answer to the best of my ability and 20 minutes later, he's ready to sleep. Phew! These are such typical questions. Charlie is never happy with a simple answer. He is a process man. He needs to know. That boy is going to keep me on my toes for the rest of my life. Sweet Cole was sleeping soundly through the entire discussion.
