Just experienced leaf-peeping at it's best. For those who aren't familiar with the term, leaf peeping (according to Wikipedia) is "an autumn activity in areas where foliage changes colors. Leaf peepers are those who participate in photographing and viewing the fall foliage." I flew out to Virginia to meet Grammie and spend a few days in Shenandoah National Park. The park is located in the Blue Ridge mountains in Appalachian mountain range. We drove 41.7 miles on Skyline Drive (a road traveling along the crest of the Blue Ridge mountains) until we arrived at Skyland Lodge. The scenic drive was really quite beautiful with all of the fall colors, but visiting with Grammie was the highlight. The stayed in a rustic motel-type abode, which was very comfortable. Well, parts of it were comfortable. The room offered a heated toilet seat (b/c the heater was situated right next to the toilet), in lieu of hot water (or even warm water for that matter). We spent very little time in the room though. I got to go on a couple of beautiful hikes, one to an 86 foot waterfall, while Grammie enjoyed curling up with a book. We enjoyed a "clogging" performance, which was a new experience for me. The dancing from the hills was pretty impressive. I also took a ride on Sugar Foot the horse, who had one blue eye (one brown), a nice disposition and emphysema. The food was even pretty good for a national park. Grammie's friends came over on the second day we were there. We met up with them for cocktails and dinner. They thought I was Grammie daughter...I'm sure because Grammie looks sooo young and has nothing to do with my graceful aging. It snowed the night before we left and rained the entire trip to the airport on Thursday. So we left just in time. I am so happy I was able to travel to Shenandoah with Grammie. Hope to see her again real soon.
