Charlie's 8 Year Old Magic Pirate Fiesta

Charlie's 8th birthday was a hodge-podge of themes. The party boasted a pirate ship cake, pizza, a fund-raiser for The Humane Society, a spectacular magician, and a pinata. What more could a big boy ask for? For the past three years Charlie has asked friends to help him raise money (in lieu of gifts) to help with upkeep of various zoo animals. For years, he has graciously gone along with my idea that more "stuff" is not what this world, or he needs, even though lots of gifts from friends would have been preferable. I always highlight that he will receive several really neat things from family, which will be enough. This year was the first year that he really voiced that he wanted presents instead of raising money for a cause. I felt conflicted by this, but we compromised that if he wanted gifts, then the party would be smaller (like 4-5 friends). For a couple days he tried to narrow down his list of who would come to his party, but he just couldn't get it any smaller than 20 kids. He ultimately decided that having a party with more friends was more important than having more stuff. We discussed different local charities that he could help out. This year about 15 friends helped Charlie raise $125 for his furry friends at the pound--honoring Gloria, his beloved dog. When we dropped off the money, food, and treats at the Humane Society, they profusely thanked him and took his picture holding the money (to post for all to see). About a week later, they sent him the nicest thank you note. When Charlie received the letter, that was written on behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and animals he got the biggest smile on his face. It was such a proud moment for Charlie and me because it was the first time he realized what an impact his gift made. I hope he will remember this years to come. I'm thinking about framing the letter:) I am so proud to be the mama of my smart, beautiful, funny little guy. Happy Birthday Charlie!
