Wildlife lessons with Charlie and Cole

This morning we were welcomed by a surprise visit from two furry locals. Charlie identified them as mule deer "because they don't have any spots and they have very large ears." I quickly ran for my camera and Cole ran for his. Charlie watched the deer show from his bedroom window. Cole and I found a place in the picture window in the dining room. Our neighbor's cat, Crash, observed quietly from the far corner of our lot. I snapped about 15 photos thru the dirty window-hence the poor quality. Cole snapped about 10 of his face up real close (the camera was backwards). The deer found the squirrel feeder to have tasty treats. They also enjoyed some tulip blooms and a noxious weed called cotton-tops, that they were welcome to. The kids and I decided that the deer were a little nervous and "maybe kind of curious". About 20 minutes after their arrival, the deer departed, leaping effortlessly over the fence into the neighbor's front yard. Charlie immediately wanted to call his Nana to tell her. He asked several times how long they were in our yard, before we called. He was sooo excited! He must have told Nana and Grandpa Doug that the "deers were in our yard for 20 minutes", 20 times. He also told of other deer he'd seen in the past, including dead ones. Charlie concluded that "deers are dumb about cars. They just run right in the street and that's not smart." A pretty exciting morning all in all.
